By now most high school seniors are graduating and have put in thier deposits for the school of thier choice. Assuming you are reading this, you may be an incoming freshman to the beautiful Green Mountain College. This will be a very exciting time for each and every one of you incoming students. There will be so much going on from the wilderness course, orientation, meeting other new students, and getting aquainted with the new place that you will call home.
Of course you must come prepared with all your desired belongings and be ready to part with your families, but once that is done, what do you do!?!
Don’t worry, don’t panic, Green Mountain is probably the most accepting place on the planet. Everyone feels so welcome once they come to GMC and you are immedatly immersed into the GMC culture and family.
Regardless of how welcoming everyone is during the first week of school, it is always nice to establish yourself in a group of students that already know the place well. Without sounding too bias, the best way to do so is to join an athletic team. At Green Mountain we don’t even know what the term “try-outs” are. Nobody is cut from any team; this is the best place to pick up a sport for the sheer sake of getting in shape and meeting cool new people.
Last year when I came to Green Mountain College as a transfer student I felt welcome and everything through orientation and all that, but I wanted a solid group to see eveyday and get to know as a base group of friends. I joined cross country and loved every second of it. Everyone on the team makes you feel like a cross country family as we traveled to meets together and shared experiences through practices and just hanging out together. Joining cross country introduces you into a group of student-athletes that are really laid back about eveything but run together for fun to stay in shape and compete for fun at various meets.
Becoming part of the cross country team is not nearly as daunting as trying to do so at other colleges. Everyone is accepted to the team and we all get along great. If you join cross country I personally promise you that it will be an unforgettable experience and we will all have so many great times together.
Come on out and run with us! 🙂
