Who Needs Feminism?

By Krista Shugart

Denise Castro’s Delicate Balance Project has reached over 8,500 people so far and has been shared widely through facebook, tumblr, and other social media platforms. Delicate Balance is a class that all seniors take and each student works all semester on a project that will leave an impact. In Denise’s case this impact has reached thousands of people in just one month, and the positive impact will only continue to spread.

The “Green Mountain College Needs Feminism Because…” campaign took place on November 22, 2013 and students sat outside the dining hall all day and students, professors, and staff members had the opportunity to write why THEY needed feminism in their lives and were photographed.

To check out all the seventy-one photos you can look at Green Mountain College’s tumblr at http://greenmtncollege.tumblr.com/ check the “Green Mountain College” facebook page, or the “Green Mountain College Need’s Feminism Because” facebook page.

The “Who Needs Feminism?” campaign is a national campaign started by sixteen womyn from Duke University. The goal of this campaign is to challenge stereotypes surrounding feminists and to assert the importance of feminism today.

What is feminism? “It is the advocacy of women’s rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men.”

Green Mountain College would like to thank Denise for her amazing contribution to this campus, and for reaching so many people & inspiring others to take positive initiatives like this!
