Activism by Krista Shugart

On Saturday October 13, 2012 thirteen Green Mountain College students from Activism @ GMC (a club on campus) went to Burlington to attend Bill McKibben’s “Do The Math Tour.” In this tour Bill McKibben talked about his Rolling Stone article that came out this summer called “Global Warming’s Terrifying New Math.” This was a call to action for students, and we were all very inspired and fired up after hearing him speak. There were students from several different colleges at the event including University of Vermont, Middlebury and Castleton.

“It’s simple math: we can burn 565 more gigatons of carbon and stay below 2°C of warming — anything more than that risks catastrophe for life on earth. The only problem? Fossil fuel corporations now have 2,795 gigatons in their reserves, five times the safe amount. And they’re planning to burn it all — unless we rise up to stop them.” -Bill McKibben

I would highly recommend readers to check out the website http://math.350.org/ and read up on more information, and to read Bill McKibben’s article “Global Warming’s Terrifying New Math.” Environmental issues are extremely important in this election, because quite simply, we need to keep the earth in livable shape, and we need to stop the fossil fuel industry to do this.

“You are undone if you once forget that the fruits of the earth belong to us all, and the earth itself to nobody.” -Rousseau
